CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) — It could be quite a shot to peoples beauty routine. Some young women are turning to a newer therapy to stop wrinkles before they even have them. It may be the ultimate in maintaining looks and for many who get hair or nails done regularly it’s simply become another part of the beauty routine. As one mom Local 12 News talked to at the Face and Eye Aesthetic Center at the Cincinnati Eye Institute said, it’s made all the difference in keeping her forever young. If a picture is worth a thousand words, four of those words were what Heather Harris said back to people when they would tell her she looks great. Heather said, Looks can be deceiving! Harris made the decision to really stick it to the aging process recently with the hottest trend in stopping wrinkles before they ever start. Its what Dr. Ginger Henson, an oculoplastic surgeon, called preventative botox. Botox is a drug made from the toxin that can cause the paralyzing disease known as botulism. A tiny amount of it is extracted and as part of the drug injected into the skin. Dr. Henson said, And it basically paralyzes the muscle, or weakens it, and then gradually wears off over time. Botox has long been used to try to get rid of wrinkles but Dr. Henson says the newer trend in botox injections as a preventative treatment is based on the idea that Heather Harris has two kinds of wrinkles. There are dynamic wrinkles that happen when people move their facial muscles and then there are static wrinkles that are kind of there when the face is at rest. While it does work for prevention a few other things are really important as well when it comes to people taking care of their skin. Dr. Henson said people have got to have good skincare products, they need to not hang out in the sun without sun protection and more importantly people cant smoke. The cost on average is about 50 per area and is not covered by medical insurance plans. The biggest risks are pain at the injections sites, bruising and in some cases dryness in the eyes and mouth. Those are the most common places injections are requested to prevent wrinkles. Some young men are choosing this option as well especially as the job market gets tougher and looking younger some say can give people a competitive edge.
