10 things you should know about Vaseline✨
1. A chemist, Robert Chesebrough came across of a residue called rod wax that had to be removed from oil rig pumps. The oil workers had been using the substance to heal their skin. Chesebrough collected samples of the rod wax and extracted the usable petroleum jelly which he called Vaseline. This happened back in 1859
2. Vaseline was made by the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company but then it merged with Pond’s and was purchased by Unilever in 1987.
3. Vaseline is actually an occlusive that prevents evaporation of water from the stratum corneum (outermost skin layer) and seals out external water.
4. White petrolatum, the ingredient in petroleum jelly Vaseline, is refined from petroleum.
5. Vaseline contains highly refined mineral oil. Unrefined mineral oils often contain adulterants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can increase risk for certain forms of cancer when consumed orally. But Vaseline is highly refined and used topically so there is no link between topical petroleum jelly-based moisturizers and cancer has been found in large studies over many years.
6. Cosmetic grade petrolatum is non comedogenic. But some of my subscribers have told me that Vaseline caused them breakouts while others told me that Vaseline worked really well for them
7. Vaseline is also known as wonder jelly for its multitasking ability.
8. AAD(American Academy of Dermatology Association) tells 5 ways to use Vaseline: a) Relieve dry skin, including your lips and eyelids. b) Help injured skin heal. c) Prevent chafing. d) Treat diaper rash. e) Rehydrate nails.
9. AAD also says “While petroleum jelly has many benefits, it shouldn’t be used for everything. Avoid putting petroleum jelly on your face if you are acne-prone, as this may cause breakouts in some people.”
10. I use Vaseline for my lips, hands and feet mostly. I also sometimes use it to tame my eyebrows. Recently I used it to oil cleanse which worked for me but I don’t think it’s gonna work for eveyone.
