On Friday, December 13, 2024, a routine cleanup operation at Venice Beach led to the arrest of a homeless woman for assault during a multi-agency task force effort. The operation, aimed at addressing safety and sanitation concerns at one of Los Angeles’ most frequented public spaces, included participation from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Los Angeles Park Rangers, the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, and Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors.
The incident occurred when Los Angeles Park Rangers requested the woman to remove her belongings from the pergola, in accordance with Los Angeles Municipal Code 63.44.b, which prohibits the storage of personal property in public spaces. The woman refused to comply, and as officers approached to remove the items, she struck an officer. The woman was subdued and taken into custody by LAPD officers.
Following the arrest, the cleanup resumed as planned. Sanitation workers, equipped with protective suits, continued removing hazardous and non-hazardous waste while adhering to strict safety protocols. LAPD officers and Park Rangers maintained security, ensuring the safety of both workers and the public during the operation.
The Venice Beach pergola, often used as shelter by unhoused individuals, was a focus of the cleanup. The operation was supported by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), which distributed food, water, and hygiene kits to individuals impacted by the effort. A representative from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office was also on-site, emphasizing the city’s ongoing commitment to balancing public health and safety with resources for the homeless community.
This incident highlights the complexities Los Angeles faces in addressing homelessness while maintaining cleanliness and safety in public spaces. The city continues to pursue a balanced approach, enforcing municipal codes while providing empathy and assistance to those in need.
