Screw That! Podcast #1 – Lino Barruncho & The mindset for getting back up again

I said “Screw Diabetes” on the day I decided to confront my fears of dying from low blood sugar levels and went out for a 1 kilometer run around my apartment block—two years after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

I’ve said “Screw Diabetes” every day since.

Many kilometers and an Ironman World Championship later, I decided it was time to say it louder.

We are building a community of people united by the desire of screwing up the plans diabetes had for us on the day of our diagnosis – this includes individuals living with diabetes and everyone who contributes to fight this condition.

We are also bringing into our crew the special people without diabetes capable of saying “Screw That!”. The ones who demonstrate a level of grit and resilience comparable to that of what individuals with diabetes use to fight diabetes every single day.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE
To open things up, I sat down and talked with Lino Barruncho.

Lino was the coach behind my qualification for the Ironman70.3 World Championship.
More than his accolades as a professional athlete, what convinced me to work with him was the way he was able to get up again after life hammered him down. Repeatedly.

A life story that I am happy to bring to you now.
We held the conversation in Portuguese, but English subtitles are available.

ABOUT DR. PEDRO DIAS
I transformed my diagnosis from one of the most disabling moments of my life into the foundation of who I am today.

I defied my fears with each step I took – from running the first 1 km around my apartment block two years after my diagnosis, to completing my first Ironman.

With each step, I broke down what I thought were my limits. Each step helped propelling me to reach my professional goals. Each step was a testament to what could be achieved.

I studied and performed scientific research at the World’s top universities, including University College London (UCL) and University of Pennsylvania (UPenn).

Having graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Porto, I then obtained a PhD in Pharmacology with a focus on Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience, and published multiple scientific papers in the World’s top scientific journals, including Science, Nature, Cell, Neuron, and Current Biology.

I worked in biotech where I led a team of scientists on a quest to discover treatments against human disease.

During this time, I was responsible for projects valued at 500M euros, was actively involved in the company’s growth and in its nomination as a World Top 15 early-stage biotech company.
