Hello my wonderful wavies and curly and coily coterie.
I know a few weeks back, Curly Susie ( announced that she was leaving Youtube to focus on other areas of her life. While I completely understand and support her decision, and wish her the best in her future, it made me a little sad. Susie was the first curly hair influencer I found with hair similar to mine when I started the curly girl method in 2018. I’ve followed her for years now and went through my own pregnancy at the same time as her with my daughter being born only two months after Hank.

So to show my appreciation for the influence she’s had on me and my curly hair journey, I wanted to make this video where I follow her routine. I used to do the same routine as Susie, even going so far as to use the same conditioner and gel. I applied my products in the same way and let my hair air dry. But as I got farther into my healthy hair journey, I started using more products and more complicated styling techniques, so that my routine is no longer even close to Susie’s. With Susie leaving Youtube, though, it reminded me of my old techniques and how well they used to work for me. Our hair changes so much during our transition phase. My hair started off wavy, but now it has much more of a curl to it. So I was curious how these products and techniques would work on my hair now.
Two of the products I use are the same ones she uses, the Tresemme Botanique Conditioner and the Bioterra gel. Susie doesn’t really have a shampoo she uses like the others. In fact, she tends to co-wash pretty frequently. But co-washing has never worked well for me, so in this video, I use a shampoo that I got back at the beginning of my own journey when I was following her routine more frequently.
I did do this routine twice. I learned a few things the first time through. Susie’s routine is pretty simple. She starts by washing her hair. Typically she co-washes, but occasionally, she does use a sulfate free shampoo. Then she uses conditioner to detangle her hair, bringing it in front of her face and squishing to condish before letting it sit for a few minutes. Then she rinses out the conditioner, roping her hair into defined clumps, before applying gel with the praying hands technique. Finally, she scrunches in the gel, micro-plops and lets it air dry. Sometimes she does a full plop in a t-shirt, and occasionally she diffuses.
The first time I did this routine, I followed Susie’s routine exactly. I did plop my hair for a few minutes to get dressed, but I did also air dry. And after my hair dried, I realized a few things. I’m not completely sure about what Susie’s hair texture is like, but I have low porosity hair and I’m assuming Susie’s is more of a medium porosity. When I scrunched the water out of my hair, I ended up scrunching most of the gel out with it. That left my hair with very little hold. And while I did get more volume than I’m used to, I didn’t get much definition and it came with a lot of frizz. And as the day went on, it got even frizzier.
So the second time I washed it, I reapplied more gel after plopping to help with hold and then I diffused my hair. This made a huge difference.
This is a great routine for anyone who is just starting their healthy hair journey and needs a low budget easy curly hair routine or for someone who is busy and wants a quick curly hair routine or a low maintenance curly or wavy hair routine. I hope this helps.
