The hotel was founded in 1898 by the Swiss hotelier César Ritz. When it opened in 1898, the Ritz Paris made history as the first hotel in the world to offer electricity on every floor and rooms with private bathrooms.
The hotel was also a paradise for writers on the road to fame, from Marcel Proust and Ernest Hemingway to Marguerite Duras. It was a discreet refuge for Maria Callas, and home for over twenty years to Coco Chanel.
Beginning in 2012, the hotel underwent a four-year, multimillion-euro renovation, reopening on 6 June 2016.
